ROD Mackenzie reports anglers fishing along the Murray River at Swan Hill are catching reasonable numbers of Murray cod to 60cm on spinnerbaits.

Murray crays are being caught downstream to Wood Wood, with carp the best bait.

Also around Victoria, the Robinvale area is producing small numbers of cod but many are over a metre in length.

Best methods are casting lures to snags and trolling deep diving lures.

It is a similar story at Wemen.

Mildura continues to fish well for Murray cod to 1.1m and downstream towards Wentworth anglers using spinnerbaits are catching good numbers of yellowbelly to 1.5kg.

The Wakool River has yellowbelly to about 1kg being hooked on scrubworms, and the Edward River is producing small cod but good numbers of large Murray crayfish.

Eildon Pondage is being filled, reports Gary Constantine.

Due to low water levels in the Pondage, fishing has been slow although he had an "unconfirmed report of a 5.4kg rainbow trout" caught on Powerbait in the Cemetery Hole.

Gary said Lake Eildon is producing reasonable numbers of rainbow trout to about 1.5kg.

The best results are coming from flat line trolling Tassie Devil lures in the main arm and near the mouth of Big River.

Bait fishing with scrubworms and Powerbait and fly fishing with Black Nymphs and Woolly Buggers is producing similar-size trout at Pt Dethridge, the Jerusalem Creek boat ramp and in the marinas.

Bob McPherson at Portland said there were still good numbers of southern bluefin tuna averaging about 12kg running in about 50m of water between Portland and Port MacDonnell.

Successful method is trolling skirted lures and bibless minnows.

Anglers bottom fishing in about 70m of water are catching gummy sharks to 13kg and school sharks to 17kg.

In the Western District, Doug Lucas reports flat-line trolling in Lake Bullen Merri is the best method for catching rainbow trout to 2kg.

The same technique is producing brown and rainbow trout to 1.5kg at Lake Purrumbete.

In the estuaries, Doug said the lake section of the Curdies River is producing small numbers of bream to 38cm on greyback minnow and that Aire River estuary has bream to 35cm being caught on shrimp.

In Port Phillip Bay, King George whiting to 38cm continue to be caught on squid and pipi from Queenscliff to St Leonards and Sorrento.

Queenscliff Harbour has good numbers of silver trevally to 1kg, with the best results coming on soft plastic lures and bluebait.

Salmon schools, with fish averaging about 1kg, are being encountered from piers and boats in many areas including Mornington, Safety Beach, Mt Martha, Black Rock and Corio Bay.

Successful methods include bait fishing with pipi or bluebait, trolling and spinning.

Calamari squid are being caught from Mornington pier and a few are coming from the Lonsdale Bight.

Gunnamatta beach is producing salmon averaging about 1kg.

In the Gippsland Lakes, Lakes Entrance has silver trevally taking pilchard, whiting near Nyerimilang Park and yelloweye mullet in the North Arm.

At Lake Tyers dusky flathead are being caught at Burnt Bridge and Cherry Tree on lures.

Bream are being caught on peeled prawn fished in the snags.

In the Mitchell River, estuary perch and bream are biting on prawn and soft plastic lures at Eagle Point.

The Tambo River is producing bream and flathead on prawn and crab at Whelans and the Lucerne Paddock.

Bream are on the bite at the mouth of the Nicholson River, which is also holding good numbers of mullet.

In East Gippsland, the estuary at Marlo is fishing well for luderick, yelloweye mullet and bream on sandworm.

In Mallacoota Inlet, the bream are upstream in the Genoa and Wallagaraugh rivers and taking peeled prawn.
