CITRUS growers and other interested people have been invited to sample a new mandarin variety.

Bred by the CSIRO and under commercialisation by Perfection Fresh, Merbeingold 2336 produces sweet, juicy, easy-peel seedless fruit.

The tasting will be held at the Murray Valley Citrus office in Mildura today from 2pm to 5pm.

Wine strategy

TWO Victorian wineries are part of a strategy to boost the international standing of Australian wine, launched in Shanghai late last month.

Tom Carson, general manager and chief winemaker of Yabby Lake, on the Mornington Peninsula, and Willy Lunn, chief winemaker of Yering Station, in the Yarra Valley, were among 10 winemakers who were part of a delegation to China led by Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation marketing manager Paul Henry.

Average tomato yields

PROCESSING tomato growers have reported record average yields this season.

Australian Processing Tomato Research Council industry development manager Liz Mann said the rain-interrupted harvest resulted in some of the 2806ha of crops being harvested more than 160 days after planting.

But the average yield was more than 94 tonne/ha, up from the previous season record of 90 tonne/ha.

Labelling meeting

A MEETING to explain changes to chemical labelling proposed by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority will be held at Lilydale next week.

Department of Primary Industries staff will discuss issues such as mandatory buffer zones, which are determined by droplet size, weather conditions and new record-keeping requirements.

The meeting will be at the Swinburne University's Lilydale campus next Thursday from 1pm to 2.30pm.
