EILDON Pondage is being filled again and the fishing is picking up, with word Fisheries Victoria is planning to release more trout.

On the saltwater scene, the best bite is in the Maribyrnong River in Melbourne where young anglers are doing well on bream.

Rod Mackenzie reports big Murray cod have come on the bite along the Murray River.

Best reports have come from Wemen through to Wentworth with cod to about 23kg being caught casting spinnerbaits and large hard-body lures to snags, and trolling the pool water.

Reasonable numbers of yellowbelly are being caught on lures cast to the bank side of weed beds near Mildura.

Eildon Pondage is rising and Gary Constantine at Eildon Bait and Tackle reports that small numbers of brown and rainbow trout to about 850g are being caught at the Cemetery and along Bourke St on Powerbait, dough and maggots.

The boat ramp area at Point Dethridge on Lake Eildon is steady for small rainbow trout on Powerbait.

Jerusalem Creek has rainbow trout to 800g taking Powerbait, and redfin taking scrubworms.

In the Western District, Lake Bullen Merri at Camperdown is fishing well for brown trout to 2.5kg and rainbow trout to 1.5kg flat-line and lead-line trolling with Tassie Devil lures.

Southern bluefin tuna to about 12kg are being caught from Port MacDonnell to Port Fairy on trolled lures.

In Port Phillip Bay, the Maribyrnong River has large numbers of bream to 35cm with most fish being caught on scrubworms during the ebb tide.

Pinkies from 32-40cm are being caught off Williamstown on soft-plastic lures.

Garfish are in reasonable numbers at Frankston, Mt Eliza, Seaford and Mornington.

Barracouta are reported to be taking lures off Mornington pier while sand flathead are taking soft-plastic lures in 7-9m of water between Mt Martha and Seaford.

The Patterson River is producing bream to 38cm on peeled prawn, scrubworms and lures.

Calamari squid are being caught off Point Cook, Clifton Springs, St Leonards, Point Lonsdale Bight, and piers at Portsea and Sorrento.

King George whiting to about 44cm are being caught off Portsea and St Leonards on squid, pipi and mussel.

In Western Port, small numbers of snapper to 5kg have been caught off Cowes on squid.

King George whiting to 40cm are being caught near the Tyabb Bank, along with calamari squid to 1kg.

On Bass Coast beaches, salmon reports are varied. A few salmon to about 1kg were caught off Gunnamatta and Rye back beach on bluebait or whitebait fished with surf poppers; beaches at Kilcunda and Venus Bay are more productive for salmon from about 300g to 1kg.

In the Gippsland Lakes, Lakes Entrance waterfront is producing luderick, silver trevally and yelloweye mullet.

At Hollands Landing, luderick, yelloweye mullet and bream are biting on sandworm and yabbies at Tom's Creek.

The Mitchell River has bream and flathead in the Backwater, and estuary perch at Eagle Point with soft-plastic lures, prawn and spider crab bringing results.

In the Tambo River, yelloweye mullet and bream are being caught near the mouth on sandworm, crab and prawn.

The Straight Six in the Nicholson River is good for bream and yelloweye mullet on prawn and crab.

Large bream are taking hard-body lures near Cameron's Arm on Lake Tyers with the top end of Toorloo Arm producing flathead on soft-plastic lures.

Marlo beaches are holding good numbers of salmon with tailor, mullet, flathead and gummy shark also being caught.

Best results coming on bluebait, squid and surf poppers.

The estuary at Marlo has bream to 45cm, yelloweye mullet and luderick being caught on sandworm.

At Mallacoota, salmon are being caught from the beach on blue surf poppers and pilchards.

The waterfront area is fishing well for garfish and leather-jackets, with bream being caught on prawn and lures between Palmer Bank and Cape Horn.
