NORTHWEST Victoria will soon have a new grain-packing plant in operation.
Wakefield Transport has begun building a plant capable of packing and shipping up to 1500 containers of grain each year at its depot in Merbein.
Group manager Ken Wakefield hopes to eventually more than double its capacity.
Mr Wakefield said the plant was approved by the Mildura Rural City Council in January but a group of local residents objected and the matter was referred to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
He said the residents recently withdrew their objections and VCAT had now given the green light to the project.
Mr Wakefield said the plant would be used to contract pack containers for the company's customers.
The first stage of the project will be construction of the packing plant comprising four 120-tonne silos and a grain conveyor loader, expected to be completed by the end of September.
The second stage will see construction of another eight silos.
