ANGLERS heading to East Gippsland for the run of big spawning bream over the next few weeks look set for some productive fishing.
Most estuaries continue to return consistent catches
Mallacoota Inlet, Cape Horn and The Narrows are producing bream on yabbies and prawn, with dusky flathead being caught on lures in the Genoa River.
Bemm River has luderick biting in the channel on sandworm and bream in the lake taking peeled prawn and vibe lures.
The estuary system at Marlo is producing yelloweye mullet, bream and luderick on sandworm and prawn. Salmon are in good numbers at Lakes Entrance and Marlo where they are taking metal lures, bluebait and surf poppers.
Lake Tyers has bream around Cameron's Arm taking prawn and hard body lures. Hopetoun Channel at Lakes Entrance has luderick, silver trevally and salmon.
At Paynesville, yelloweye mullet, salmon and King George whiting are being caught at the north end of Raymond Island. Metung has luderick, bream and silver trevally being caught on shrimp, prawn and soft plastic lures.
In the Mitchell, Nicholson and Tambo rivers, spider crab, prawn, sandworm baits, and vibe and soft plastic lures are producing results. Toms Creek at Hollands Landing is fishing well for bream on sandworm and prawn.
South Gippsland beaches at Venus Bay and Gunnamatta are producing salmon from 600g to 1.8kg.
Western Port has King George whiting to 46cm being caught in Cat Bay on pipi and squid. Calamari squid to 1.5kg are being caught off Flinders on squid jigs.
Snook to about 1m are being caught on lures worked near the weed beds and drop offs.
In Port Phillip Bay, Mick Kaksa reports the Maribyrnong River is producing good numbers of bream to 36cm on scrubworms, and a few mulloway to 6kg on lures.
The Yarra River has bream to 40cm and mulloway to 10kg caught on vibe lures.
Squid are being caught at Point Cook, Sorrento, Point Lonsdale and St Leonards on baited and artificial jigs. Salmon to about 1kg are being caught on trolling lures near Blairgowrie.
A few snapper reports with fish to 6kg in Corio Bay, to 4.5kg off Black Rock and Seaford.
Lauriston Reservoir is consistent with anglers reporting steady catches of brown trout averaging about 1kg on small minnow lures and search pattern flies including Woolly Buggers and Tom Jones.
Gary Constantine at Eildon said Lake Eildon has good numbers of small trout being caught on maggots fished from shore at Point Dethridge.
Flat line trolling in the Big River arm has been slow for brown trout to 1.3kg.
Eildon Pondage has improved with brown trout to 3kg taken on green and orange coloured Powerbait at Bourke St.
In the Western District, Doug Lucas reports Lake Wurdiboluc has brown and rainbow trout being caught on scrubworms. Lake Bullen Merri at Camperdown has rainbow trout to 2.5kg and brown trout to 1.5kg being caught trolling and by anglers fishing from the north bank using Powerbait and scrubworms.
Neil Shelton at Nelson reports bream to 40cm being caught on whitebait, prawn and lures near Sapling Creek. Estuary perch are in good numbers at Lasletts Landing and being caught on bluebait, whitebait and vibe and hard body lures.
Mulloway are making another run and fish to 10.4kg have been caught near the bridge at Nelson on broken back lures and squid. Southern bluefin tuna to about 12kg are still running off Portland. Most fish being caught on trolled lures.
