AUSTRALIA'S biggest landowner wants to build an abattoir on the outskirts of Darwin.
The $50 million proposal was yesterday warmly welcomed by cattlemen, the Northern Territory News reports.
The Australian Agricultural Company is considering the idea after being told that a slaughterhouse is needed in the Top End to handle "heavy" cattle.
An abattoir could lead to a new export trade in chilled meat.
The plan follows Indonesia slapping a 360kg weight restriction on live imports to protect its feedlots, which fatten the cows before selling them on.
Northern Territory cattlemen export 360,000 head a year, mostly to Indonesia.
