WIDESPREAD showers and strong winds are likely across Victoria this weekend as a vigorous cold front sweeps over south-eastern Australia.
"After a mild week, one of the strongest cold fronts so far this year will blast across the southeast this weekend," The Weather Channel meteorologist Tom Saunders said.
"The front will generate potentially damaging winds, heavy showers, thunderstorms and small hail across most of Victoria."
"Over 48 hours of windy weather is on the way, with wind strengthening on Saturday, remaining strong and possibly even gale force during Sunday, before gradually easing on Monday afternoon."
Most of southern Victoria is forecast to receive more than 10mm of rain from this system; totals on the higher ranges and near the western coast will be even higher at 25mm.
"Polar air will penetrate Victoria behind the front,” Mr Saunders said. "So as well as strong wind and rain, there will be a marked drop in temperature by Sunday.
