AN automatic sheep draft made of plastic won the major sheep innovation award at Sheepvention.

The New Zealand-made Gallagher Sheep Auto Drafter, which was released two months ago in NZ, won both the innovation and handling awards on Monday.

The overall winner was the electronic grain monitor, Auger-Eye, from Greg McCarten from Griffith in NSW.

The Auguer-Eye incorporates an electric sensor which shuts a grain auger when a silo is filled.

Gallagher Victorian sales manager Jeff Chadwick said the auto-drafter was made of heavy-duty plastic.

It also incorporates weight sensors which trigger the automatic opening and shutting of gates.

He said the drafter, with electronic tag readers, scales and console, would retail for about $17,500.
