THE Australian grain industry has tough competition in promoting its product and developing markets overseas.
North American Export Grain Association senior adviser Kirk Russell said the US Government invested $US250 million (about $A280 million) each year in commodity promotion funds.

Mr Russell said funding was distributed to US commodity organisations to market their produce.
"One program allows us to establish offices overseas," he said.
"Another program helps us to bring delegations to the US and take (American) delegations to host countries, plus carry out educational seminars and crop quality surveys.
"It is a comprehensive program done as a cost share between the government and private sector."
Some grain industry groups have called for a new body to promote Australian grain industry overseas and develop international markets since the Federal Government scrapped the wheat single desk.
