REGIONAL winter pasture growth bounced along demand for heavy grown steers with prices peaking at $862 at Wodonga today.
Buyers were treated to an exceptional yarding of grown yearling steers with plenty of weight, and they responded by paying 171-206c/kg.
Selling agents Albury-Wodonga Independent Stock Agents yarded 3000 cattle - 500 more than advertised - for the special sale.
Buyers attended from Pakenham, Benalla, Wangaratta, Myrtleford, Cobram, Corryong, Crookwell, Narrandera and South Australia.
Major feedlots operating at the sale included Ladysmith, Hopkins River, Conroy Bros and Moyhu Beef.
In the female offering, mixed age, unjoined cows and calves, made $960-$1280.
Those rejoined for an autumn calving sold for $1230.
Sharp Partnership, Cudgewa, topped the steer offering with a pen of Angus weighing 459kg and selling for $862 (187c/kg).
The balance of the grown steers sold down to $690.
Demand was solid for weaner and yearling steers, weighing 250-350kg, with prices of $556-$700, or 210-238c/kg.
Lightweight weaners weighing under 250kg topped at $606 and sold down to $370.
Lotfeeders and restockers competed strongly on the grown heifers, weighing over 300kg.
They sold for $560-$715 (172-200c/kg) while younger unjoined weaner heifers sold for 189-216c/kg.
