A BIG crowd of buyers wasn't afraid to dig deep into their pockets at a dairy sale in Shepparton last week.

Dairy Livestock Services auctioneer Brian Leslie said the strong competition among buyers indicated dairy cows were still a good investment.

More than 100 people gathered at the Shepparton Selling Centre to watch the 45 registered buyers go about their bidding.

All the 228 Holstein, Holstein-cross and Jersey cows yarded, were cleared.

They sold to buyers from western and northern Victoria, the North East, Goulburn Valley, Gippsland and NSW. The average sale price was $1780.

The top-selling cow was a second lactation, freshly calved Holstein, which sold to a Gippsland buyer for $2900.

Mr Leslie said buyers showed an interest in dairy cows calving from November to autumn and he expected the trend to continue at upcoming sales. He was happy with the result.

"Lately there has been widespread demand," Mr Leslie said.

"It was a strong sale with good competition from throughout Victoria and NSW."
