UPDATE: VICTORIA is bracing itself as heavy rain and strong winds are set to deliver a wet and wild weekend.
"A rapidly deepening low pressure system, currently over South Australia is bearing down on us and will bring some very wet and windy conditions over the next 24 to 48 hours," Weatherzone meteorologist Martin Palmer said.
Over South Australia, continuous rain has already brought some of the best early spring rainfall in more than 10 years.
The low will gradually move south and east into tomorrow, pushing the rain and storms into Victoria. The system has the potential to deliver some very heavy rainfall right across the state tomorrow night.
"The rain will enter Victoria late on Friday spreading throughout by Saturday evening. Widespread 24 hour falls of 20 to 30mm could be seen north of the ranges with as much as 50 to 60mm towards the Alps," Mr Palmer said.
The heavy rain can be put down to an influx of tropical moisture.
"The system will really spin up into the weekend and draw on huge volumes of moisture from the tropics, a situation that is often seen in summer."
The heaviest of the rain should miss Melbourne, although a good drenching of up to 15mm tomorrow cannot be ruled out with the catchments seeing a little more.
Winds are also going to be a major factor with this event.
"This low is really going to turn a bit nasty during Saturday and deepen as it heads into western Bass Strait," Mr Palmer said.
"As it moves to the south the winds will whip into the southwest and drive into western parts of Victoria, with potentially damaging wind gusts above 100km/h possible."
The strongest winds will develop late tomorrow and move through the state during the early hours of Sunday.
"This is going to be some very unsettled weather and I would advise residents to keep an eye on the latest warnings," Mr Palmer said.
According to weatherzone.com.au conditions should improve later on Sunday as the low moves away and a ridge arrives from the west.
