THE "big wet" kept the steam in the store market with grown steers hitting $815 at Adelong today.

Restocker demand for breeding females was also strong with cows and calves topping at $1440.

Selling agents Elders Tumut-Adelong yarded 1500 cattle for the first stand-alone spring special sale.

Buyers attended from Young, Narrandera, Tumut, Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Griffith, Hay, Corryong, Yass, Gundagai and Mt Gambier.

The sale opened on unjoined mixed aged cows with calves, topping at $1310 and selling down to $890 for plainer types.

The rejoined portion sold for $1020-$1180.

Bidding was strong for well bred first-calf Angus heifers, with calves and rejoined, selling for $1360 to $1440.

Heavy Angus steers, aged 12-14 months, topped at $815 and sold down to $675.

Angus weaners, aged 10-12 months, sold for $590-$740.

Their Hereford counterparts commanded $610-$720.

Grown heifers averaged $530 while weaners, aged 10-12 months, topped at $670 and sold down to $410 for the lighter types.

Harden commission buyer Bob Watts bought 130 British bred steers for Young domestic feedlot, Solferino.

Mr Watts estimated he paid an average of 205-210c/kg for steers weighing 320kg and above.

"It was a good sale - the season is driving it,'' he said.

"The cattle had good weight for age, were weaned and 90 per cent were vendor bred.''
