TOMORROW is the forecast peak hatching date for the Mildura-Ouyen region based on predictions from the Australian Plague Locust Commission.
There have been numerous hatchings in the region in the lead up to the peak hatching date, and many more will occur after the date.

It is now even more important to monitor land to detect and report hatchings to the Department of Primary Industries.
Field crews were this morning deployed from the Mildura Regional Locust Information Centre to inspect and take samples of hoppers from sites at Nyah West, Ouyen, Hattah, Werrimull, and Mildura.
What can you do:
While there have been numerous hatchings in the north-west of the state over the last week – farmers and other landholders need to remember that the most cost effective and efficient time to spray is about two weeks after the hatching.
At this time the hoppers are more likely to have formed into bands that can be more easily targeted. This time frame also allows a greater number of eggs to have hatched and the locusts are still unable to fly.
It is now even more important for farmers and other landholders to monitor their properties, report hatchings or other activity to DPI and be prepared to spray.
What DPI is doing:
As detailed above field crews are working in areas across the northwest.
Reports of hatchings are vital for DPI to be able to plan activities, investigate suspected hatchings and coordinate spraying locusts.
However it will not be necessary for DPI to follow up every report in an area in order to obtain an understanding of where widespread locust activity is occurring.
This is especially the case when it becomes apparent that hatching is occurring across a particular area.
Remember:
Be ready to act. Talk to an agronomist or chemical seller about the best treatment options for your circumstances.
All landholders – including those responsible for public land such as councils and state government agencies – are responsible for treating locusts on their land.
