GIPPSLAND travellers have more late trains than any other regional area.

V/Line performance results for August show only 69 per cent of short distance services on the Gippsland line were on time for the month.

Only 73.3 per cent of long distance services ran on time.

V/Line spokesman James Kelly said maintenance on the Traralgon track caused delays.

"We worked between Pakenham and Traralgon, we replaced about 80,000 wooden sleepers with concrete. It's had a major impact on the train services as we've had a lot of speed restrictions on the track," Mr Kelly said.

He said the Gippsland line was unique because trains travel up to 50km on the metropolitan network before speeding up.

"It can be a 15 minute setback if they get stuck behind a Richmond to Pakenham train stopping all stations," he said.

Most lines failed to reach the 92 per cent benchmark for on-time services.
