FIRST cross Border Leicester Merino ewes sold to a top of $238 at Bendigo today in a sale where very few 2009-drop ewes sold for less than $160.

The Bendigo sale, conducted by Elders and Landmark, saw a relatively large yarding of 15,000 crossbred ewes including 8000 first ewe lambs.

Ian Sweeney of Jerilderie who offered 2000 2009-drop ewes topped the sale with a pen of 276 April-May 2009-drop, September shorn ewes.

Jake Napier of Bears Lagoon topped the ewe lambs pen with 94 April drop, July shorn lambs at $214.

Competition was brisk on the both the 2009-drop and ewe lambs, with  buyers from Ballarat and Gippsland among the major bidders.

Most of the joinable ewe lambs sold upwards of $160.

Most vendors were happy with the results, which were $20-$30 up on the last year.

Andrew Jones from Seaspray was one satisfied vendor.

He sold 507 April-May drop lambs to a top of $212 and an average of $190.

These were lambs he shore in September and sent them for agistment north of Bendigo.

"I would have been happy with $170-$180,"  Andrew said.
