WEANER heifers stole the spotlight selling to a New Year high of $975 at Yea today.

The price was for a pen of five Charolais Red Angus-cross heifers, that had been weighed on-farm at 414kg full, from noted breeders Ashwood Park.

A second pen of 22 heifers with a similar weight then sold for $955 to a repeat buyer from Kilmore.

Ashwood Park also claimed the top price of $895 for steers at Yea.

The talking point at Yea, however, was the sheer volume of steer calves that sold for more than $800 per head and heifers $700 plus.

Bidding only fell below $800 twice in the opening two laneways of Angus steers, with the top calves from Chartwell Farms at Romsey selling to $880.

"Have you ever seen such a run of sales over $800,'' queried local agent Andrew Embling, Landmark Alexander.

In cents per kilogram terms the sales at Yea and Mansfield were deemed similar to Wodonga the previous week, at 210c to 250c/kg for most steers.

It was the consistent quality and weight, especially at Yea, that created the spate of $800 sales.

Swift Australia was once again a volume buyer, although there was strong activity from local North East and Gippsland restockers.
