WITH Australia Day here it's timely for people to look at flying the flag.

I think this is fantastic. However, there is flag etiquette that must be followed.

One many businesses and homes forget is that the flag should be raised no earlier than first light and should be lowered no later than dusk, and it may only be flown at night when illuminated.

Another piece of etiquette is that two flags should not be flown on the same flagpole.

If you want to fly the Australian flag and a flag of your business, you need to get a second flag pole.

And if you do have more than one flag pole, our country's flag must always be flown in a position superior to that of any other flag or ensign.

It's great to see people taking national pride and showing off the flag, but it should be treated with the respect and dignity it deserves as the symbol of our nation.
