A RESTOCKER war pushed maiden heifer prices to a decade high of $1010 at Wodonga today.
Pasture growth combined with industry confidence and a shortage of quality cattle are the drivers.
Selling agents Corcoran Parker, Landmark and Elders offered 2000 cattle for the special store sale.
Buyers attended from Alexandra, Myrtleford, Euroa, Wangaratta, Corryong, Tallangatta, Finley, Cobram, Hay, Culcairn and Tarcutta.
Active lotfeeders included Ladysmith, Swift Australia, Conroy Brothers, Dowling Bros and Long Gully.
Buying for the Ladysmith feedlot, Andrew Lowe, of Wagga Wagga, paid 183-193c/kg or $890-$930 for heavy grown steers at 460-500kg.
A mixed quality yarding of grown steers over 350kg sold for $740-$930, or 183-233c/kg.
Demand was strong for the weaner and yearling steers, weighing 250-350kg, selling for $650-$830, or 205-273c/kg.
Two and a half year old heifers with calves and rejoined topped at $1610 while the unjoined portion sold for $1400.
Restockers bid strongly on heifers pregnancy tested for an autumn calving with prices of $1440-$1700.
The biggest moving category was unjoined heifers, weighing over 300kg, selling for $630-$1010, or 185-250c/kg.
Long time agent at Wodonga, Bruce Waite, said the top price of $1010 was a decade high.
Demand was equally as strong for unjoined heifers under 300kg, with prices topping at $705 and falling to $495 for plainer types.
