CEREAL rust expert Colin Wellings has won the Seed of Light award for the southern region of Australia.
Professor Wellings was presented with the award at a Grains Research Development Corporation (GRDC) research update at Young in NSW last week.
The Seed of Light awards are annually presented to those in the grain industry who have made outstanding achievements in communicating outcomes of research.
There is one award for each of the three regions in the GRDC's research zones.
Prof Wellings is employed by NSW Industry and Investment but has been seconded to the University of Sydney's cereal rust laboratory at Camden in NSW.
During the past 30 years, he has been researching the stripe rust pathogen in wheat.
GRDC southern regional panel member Andrew Rice said Prof Wellings' research focus on the control of stripe rust in wheat through genetic resistance had positioned him as a world leader in this field.
"In fact, Prof Wellings' expertise has been sought and utilised around the globe," Mr Rice said.
