CALF-rearing and heifer management workshops are on at Milawa and Corryong next week.

The workshops include a presentation from John Moran from the Department of Primary Industries and author of Calf Rearing - A Practical Guide.

Both days will run from 10am to 2pm and include lunch and drinks.

The March 8 workshop will be at The Milawa Hotel, while the March 9 workshop is at Legends on Hansen, Corryong.

Dairy scholarship

THE inaugural Dairy Australia manufacturing scholarship has been awarded to three young graduates.

Julian Southcott and Haseeb Raza, of Sydney in NSW, and Mujgan Argand, of Melbourne, will be trained in dairy manufacturing for two months.

This includes placement at Murray Goulburn, Fonterra, Parmalat and Warrnambool Cheese and Butter.

Rebecca Rozencwajg, of Melbourne, Anita Pax, from Indooroopilly in Queensland and Sudheera Polavarapu, also from Melbourne, were awarded this year's cheesemaking scholarship.

In its fourth year, the scholarship will run for two months and involves theory and practice with a one-week placement at leading cheese manufacturers National Foods, Yarra Valley Dairy and Le Casa.

Record nominations

A RECORD 75 nominations have been received for this year's Great South West Dairy Awards, eclipsing the previous highest number by more than 50 per cent.

Nominations for the best employer and employee constituted more than half the entries this year.

 Winners will be announced at the Gala Awards Night on April 7 at Glenormiston College at Terang.
