THE Coalition Government is showing itself to be decisive and sensitive to the needs of the forestry industry.

It is sensitive to the 24,000 people it directly employs and the rural communities it supports.

Among other commitments, the Coalition promised to provide the industry with long-term access to current native timber resources and to initiate five-yearly renewals for 20-year Regional Forest Agreements, to provide resource security.

At this early stage, it appears the Government is working to uphold these promises and relevant ministers and parliamentary secretaries have shown a willingness to engage with stakeholders as they begin implementing their policies.

The industry does not expect any special favours from this Government or any decisions that are not in the best interests of the wider community.

Nor do we expect any quick-fix actions to fulfil election commitments.

What we're looking for are well-considered initiatives that balance the needs of the environment with those of communities and those businesses providing employment and investment opportunities.

This is something we believe the Government is working hard to deliver and we look forward to the outcomes.
