THREE new Welger variable-chamber round balers were unveiled by Lely at its national dealer conference in Queensland last week.

And visitors to Farm World will be among the first members of the public to see the balers in action.

The three balers are the Welger RP 415, RP 445 and RP 445 Master, and each has been through a rigorous testing period in Australia before being released on to the market.

Lely Australia managing director Clive Edwards said the balers were the latest in the Welger range and featured camless pick-ups and a new configuration for the bale chamber, which allowed more control over the formation of the baler.

"There's an extra roller in the bale chamber compared to previous models and that means higher compaction rates and more weight in each bale," Clive said.

"It also means the operator has much more control of the baler so it can make perfect bales in a variety of conditions."

The camless pick-up design is becoming more popular in baler design as it has fewer moving parts and, hence, less wear and tear than cam pick-ups.

The pick-up of the baler is the part that lifts the hay or silage from its windrow in the paddock and delivers the material to the bale chamber.

Consequently, it is moving the whole time the baler is operating.

Clive said there was hardly a product the three new balers couldn't handle.

"The balers can be used for silage in wet climates to baling straw in hotter conditions so they are very flexible in terms of application," Clive said.

"And the Welger range of balers is suited perfectly to the hay and silage-making needs of Gippsland.

"Farm World is an excellent field day to attend and it suits the range of Welger balers perfectly."

Clive said Lely would also have its latest model robotic milker on display, as well as the Lely 245 fixed-chamber baler.

The new Welger balers are the third generation of the variable chamber models, and all three can produce bales with diameters of 90cm to 1.6m.

The RP 415 model is ideal for baling drier crops.

It has a 2.25m wide pick-up and a rotor feed system to ensure smooth crop flow.

The 415 does not have a cutting unit and is ideal for baling material such as hay, straw and silage.

The RP 445 baler is a heavier-duty baler available with or without a chopping device.

Clive said it was more suited to baling heavy silage crops.

At the top of the range is the Lely Welger RP 445 Master, which is capable of baling in all conditions.

The Master and the RP 445 also feature the Lely HydroFlex Control drop floor, which can flex when the baler is under heavy crop loads to prevent blockages, baler damage and overloading the baler.

The RP 445 Master also has a MasterCut 13 knife-chopper unit as standard.

An XtraCut 17 or XtraCut 25 knife-chopping unit is also available as an extra.
