First for industry
THIS grain harvest has resulted in some "firsts" across the eastern seaboard.
GrainCorp's country operations general manager Kevin Lloyd told the recent Victorian Farmers Federation annual grains conference one of the problems the bulk handler faced this harvest was grain was still being received at Moree in northern NSW at the same time growers started stripping grain in the Western District.
"That's never happened before," Mr Lloyd said.
He said it created problems with the normal movement of portable handling equipment from northern receival sites to storages further south as the harvest completed.
New planning guide
THE Grains Research and Development Corporation has developed a crop planning guide to help grain growers recover from the wet summer.
Making the Most of a Wet Summer in the Southern Region covers stubble, weed, nutrition, pest and disease-management issues.
GRDC southern panel chairman David Shannon said the publication brought together available knowledge on important issues facing growers over the coming season and also a provided a framework for decision making.
"The information provided is aimed at helping growers identify strategies that will suit their conditions and assist them in obtaining the greatest long-term benefits from the available moisture," Mr Shannon said.
