PETS will be able to hitch a ride on V/Line trains from today after the company refused to carry pets at Easter.

The backflip comes months after the Victorian Government announced that pets would be able to ride on trains.

Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder made the announcement in April but V/Line refused to comply.

Today the company released a statement saying domestic animals could travel on trains in "suitable containers".

Containers must be no larger than 56cm long, 30cm wide and 38cm high and the animal should not exceed 15kg.

The animal should be able to stand and lay down in the container.

Pets will travel in the luggage van and conductors areas on long distance services, in designated luggage areas on Sprinter trains and in the bike luggage area on the VLocity trains.

V/Line chief executive Rob Barnett said a balance between passenger comfort and pet owners had been reached.

"Conductors have the right to refuse travel if the pet is seen as savage or where space is limited inside the train," Mr Barnett said.

"Passengers wishing to travel with their pet should travel in the off-peak – that means avoiding services between 7am and 9am and between 4pm and 6pm on weekdays."
