THE Australian Conservation Foundation has been accused of using false and alarmist claims in regards to the Murray Darling Basin.

The foundation is campaigning to divert 4000 gigalitres of the Murray Darling Basin community's water to the environment.

The ACF's website states: "We remove around 11,500 gigalitres of water from the Murray and Darling Rivers per year, of its average total of about 14,000 gigalitres."

Yet the Murray Darling Basin Authority's own data shows an average 31,781 gigalitres flows into the basin annually of which 13,677 is diverted or captured by farm dams, irrigators, towns and other users.

The error and several unsubstantiated claims remain on the website, despite National Irrigators Council pleas last year to correct them.
