JOCKEYS Craig Williams and Nash Rawiller may miss the Melbourne Cup after yesterday's drama-filled Bendigo Cup.
Craig Williams' chances of winning the Melbourne Cup on Dunaden and becoming the first jockey to complete the spring carnival triple crown are in jeopardy after he was suspended at the Bendigo Cup meeting yesterday, The Daily Telegraph reported. In a day of high drama at Bendigo, Nash Rawiller, Sydney's premier jockey, was also issued with a careless riding suspension which could prevent him from partnering Unusual Suspect in the Melbourne Cup.
Williams has already won the Caulfield Cup (Southern Speed) and Cox Plate (Pinker Pinker) this month but his chances of riding in the Melbourne Cup next Tuesday could hinge on the outcome of an appeal hearing.
No jockey has won all three major races at the one carnival.
Racing Victoria officials are expected to announce today when the appeals for both jockeys are to be heard.
If the appeals hearing is convened before the close of business on Monday, and each jockey is unsuccessful in having his suspension quashed, Williams and Rawiller will need to forfeit their Cup rides.
