IT'S one trophy that Cadel Evans can't win, but the Tour de France champion will briefly get his hands on the Melbourne Cup.

Evans and world 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson will deliver the $175,000 gold trophy to the mounting yard at Flemington on Tuesday before the running of the Cup.

Victoria Racing Club CEO Dale Monteith said Evans, who held the trophy aloft as he rode down the horse walk at Flemington for the 2007 Melbourne Cup, was among a number of sporting identities involved this year.

"We're not trying to impose upon him too much this year," Mr Monteith said.

"We just want him to come along and have a great time, if we can show our appreciation for his efforts this year."

The AFL had hoped to snare Evans for a grand final appearance but the timing of the spring racing carnival suited him better, with the champion to return home to Barwon Heads after the Cup for his annual break.

"I think not only does Cadel enjoy the carnival but his wife and mother enjoy it as well. We're happy to be able to entertain them all," Mr Monteith said.

His wife Chiara Passerini will also be a guest judge for the fashions on the field.

Evans and Pearson are also expected to pop up in corporate marquees during the carnival, and will be in the Birdcage for the Victoria Derby on Saturday.
