TORQUAY Football Club could burst on to the silver screen as early as next year.
A proposed full-length feature film, tentatively titled Blinder and involving several high-profile former AFL players, could start filming in the area in February.
The script centres around a young Torquay player struggling to break into a grand final side. Tigers president Ross Henderson said the plot was entirely fictional and similar to that of Bend it like Beckham.
"Originally, the storyline was based on suburban football in Melbourne," he said.
"But after getting advice and looking at the bigger picture, they thought it might be more internationally appealing to incorporate the country lifestyle of Australia into the movie."
Mr Henderson said he was approached in April this year, when organisers scoped out the club's facilities.
He said it was "early days", but, based on conversations with Kangaroos legend Glenn Archer and Australian director Richard Gray, the project was moving ahead.
Archer told the Sunday Herald Sun he was a co-producer of the film and would help by contributing dialogue and other material. Sam Kekovich and former Carlton player Adrian Gleeson have also been linked to the project.
Mr Henderson said the film could bring opportunities for local footy players to make their film debuts and had the full support of the football club.
"I don't know what the footy club will get out of it, but it could bring a good buzz around the town and help someone get some work, or (put) some extra bums on seats in local cafes or restaurants," he said.
The Australian Film Institute, Screen Australia and Film Victoria were unaware of the project.
