DAIRY giant Murray Goulburn has elected possibly its first female director.

Tallygaroopna dairy farmer and staunch co-operative defender Natalie Akers won the seat on the board after Murray Goulburn's northern region election last week.

She will be joined by incumbent directors Ken Jones, of Gundowring, and Graham Munzel, of Gunbower

"I am really excited and really pleased and I am certainly looking forward to making a contribution around the board table," Mrs Akers said.

She was formerly chief executive of Murray Dairy - the northern offshoot of industry body Dairy Australia - and head of Victorian Farmers Federation water policy.

"I pursued a career in agriculture and the dairy industry and I can bring a different perspective to the table, hopefully use my knowledge around policy and management to contribute to Murray Goulburn," she said.

She said one of Murray Goulburn's key strengths was that it remained a strong co-operative and this was important to maintain while strengthening its supplier base.
