A MAN charged with causing the Churchill Black Saturday bushfire that claimed 10 lives has applied for bail.

Justice Paul Coghlan reserved his decision today on a Supreme Court bail application by Brendan James Sokaluk, 42, who has spent nearly three years in custody on remand.

The Director of Public Prosecutions opposed Mr Sokaluk's application.

Mr Sokaluk faces one count of  causing a bushfire and 10 counts of arson causing death.

The offences are alleged to have occurred on February 7, 2009.

The Churchill bushfire destroyed more than 100 homes, razed 36,000ha, and caused more than $100m damage.

Justic Coghlan will hand down his decision on November 10.
