THE dairy industry is milking the public's obsession with fashion.

Believe it or not, a German designer, Anke Domaske, has made a fabric entirely from milk, extracting the protein casein, which is then spun into fibres much like cotton or wool.

Using no oil and much less water to produce, it is more environmentally friendly than cotton and synthetics and is soothing to people with skin allergies.

Called "Qmilch", it drapes and folds like silk, but can be washed and dried like cotton.

About six litres of milk is required to make a dress.

Websites claim amino acids in the material increase blood circulation and slow ageing.

It is also touted as being antibacterial and doesn't smell.

And presumably, if you get lost in the mountains, you can just add water and drink it.

Not bad value for a dress retailing somewhere between $200 and $300.
