Buying into beef

GENETICS Australia will now be known for more than its involvement in the dairy industry.

From December 1, Genetics Australia has offered both beef and dairy semen and embryos, following the closure of the Global Sires business.

It is the first time Genetics Australia has offered beef semen and it plans to send out a catalogue of bulls from World Wide Sires and promote domestically bred bulls.

Southrose dispersal

THE Southrose Suffolk dispersal was held last month, marking the end of the stud based at Tintinara, South Australia.

The stud sold 67 2010-drop ewes (average $537); 42 2009-drop ewes (average $705); 25 2008-drop ewes (average $648); 59 2007-drop ewes (average $581); and 32 older ewes (average $436).

The stud also sold 63 ewe lambs for an average of $457 including one which made $1250.

The six stud sires averaged $3450, topping at $9250.

Beef Week boom

RECORD entries have been received for Beef Week next year.

The event, which runs from January 27 to February 23, has attracted 263 studs and 37 breeds of cattle.

Just 50 studs were open at the first Beef Week 20 years ago.

Conference change

THE dates for the next Angus Australia Conference have been changed.

The conference will now be held on July 3 at Ballarat.

A two-day tour of regions surrounding Ballarat will follow, starting July 4.

Meanwhile, Angus breeders are mourning the loss of one of their stalwarts last month.

Harry Williams, Victoree Farms, was president of the Angus Society from 1965 to 1967.

Limousin sale

LIMOUSIN breeders have organised a new multi-vendor sale, the Great Southern Limousin Sale, for next year.

The sale will be held on February 20 at the Clifton Selling Centre in Hamilton.

The vendors are Warrawindi, Bonian, Otway Felix and Frontiere Limousin studs.
