MELBOURNE wharfies are expected to conduct further meetings after yesterday calling off planned industrial action.
The stoppage, which would have shut down half of the Port of Melbourne for 48 hours, was to involve 500 stevedore DP World workers for 24 hours from 10pm (AEDT) last night, with the company set to retaliate with a 24-hour lock-out immediately afterwards. The Maritime Union says the stoppage was called off after workers accepted an in-principle agreement for a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement, with DP World Australia confirming the news, saying there have been constructive talks with the union, opening the way for a settlement.
