PRICES lost some of their sting at today's sale of about 40,000 sheep at Deniliquin.

First-cross ewes were up to $40 a head cheaper than earlier this summer and Merino ewes started slowly but gained momentum as the sale continued.

An unnamed client of Elders Deniliquin paid the day's top price of $244 for a pen of 236 June-July 2010-drop Pooginook blood August shorn Merino ewes joined to Border Leicester rams from Myrnong, of Conargo.

The top first-cross price was $186, paid by Tim Whykes, of Charlton, for 96 April-May 2011-drop December shorn ewes from Karoola Park.

Buyers came from Ararat, Bairnsdale, Ballarat, Bendigo, Charlton, Corowa, Crookwell, Deniliquin, Donald, Echuca, Finley, Goulburn, Hay, Kerang, Nyngan, Shepparton, Stawell, Swan Hill, Wagga Wagga, Wangaratta, Warracknabeal and Yarrawonga.
