SCHOOL leavers planning to start an agricultural-related degree can apply for The Horizon Scholarship to ease costs and gain work experience.

The Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation's Horizon Scholarship is a bursary of $5000 a year for the duration of the scholar's university degree.

RIRDC's managing director Craig Burns said the scholarship was developed to support the next generation of agricultural leaders.

"We are looking for young people who are passionate about agriculture, with a keen interest in the future of our industries and who are ready to expand their networks and learn new skills," Mr Burns said.

Current Horizon scholar, Naomi Marks from Dorrigo in NSW, who is studying a Bachelor of Agribuisness at UNE, said the scholarship helped financially but also gave her a chance to develop practical skills for entering the workforce.

Applications close February 1 and shortlisted applicants must be available for a telephone interview before the winners are announced later that month.
