HERE'S an insight into the latest off-road driving aid.

When the latest Lexus LX 570 arrives before mid-year, it will come with "Turn Assist" for tight off-road turns.

The system reduces the turning circle by adding more brake force to the inside rear wheel.

It is one of many off-road driving aids in the new Lexus, which will arrive with revised styling, new bumpers and lights and 20-inch wheels as standard.

There are now wide-angle cameras in the grille and exterior mirrors to assist driving in tight spaces, the images relayed to the driver via the navigation system screen.

Standard equipment includes 10 airbags, four-zone climate control, a 19-speaker surround-sound system, dual rear-seat entertainment screens, power sliding second-row seats, power retractable third-row seats and daytime lights.

The steering wheel and driver's seat retract to improve access when the ignition is turned off.

Output from the 5.7-litre V8 petrol engine is up 15kW to 285kW and torque is up 20Nm to 550Nm with 90 per cent of torque available from just 2200rpm.

The six-speed automatic transmission is a carry over, but now includes updated crawl control increasing the number of preset speeds from three to five for greater off-road control.

The transfer case remains full-time four-wheel drive with a Torsen limited-slip locking centre differential directing more power to the wheels with the best grip.

A new multi-terrain function offers a choice of five settings including rock, dirt and rock, mogul, loose rock, and mud and sand.

The hydro-pneumatic adaptive suspension has three modes - comfort, normal and sport - to control the spring rate, and shock absorbers.

And the anti-lock braking system automatically adjusts for on- and off-road surfaces.
