FIRE crews were last night battling to control a major grassfire at Echuca near the NSW border.
More than 30 Victorian and NSW fire units were deployed to the Picola-Barmah Road Bridge crossing near Barmah as the blaze raged over more than 40ha, the Herald Sun reports.
Police urged people to avoid the area.
The Picola-Barmah Road Bridge crossing was re-opened to traffic at 6pm.
But the grassfire was ongoing and police advised all campers in the Barmah Forest area to listen out for local radio, weather and emergency services broadcasts, a police spokesman said.
