CHICKEN brand La Ionica has been fined $100,000 over its use of phrase "free to roam" in marketing material.

Parent company Turi Foods will accept the fine and take out newspaper advertisements apologising to consumers as part of a deal that ends legal action brought by consumer watchdog the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Last month, the Federal Court heard each chicken at Turi Foods had the space equivalent to an A4 sheet of paper in which to move around - an admission judge Richard Tracey said contravened reasonable expectations of "free to roam".

Two other chicken suppliers, Bartter Enterprises and Baiada Poultry and the Australian Chicken Meat Federation, continue to fight the ACCC lawsuit.
