FIREWORKS shows will go ahead and parks will be open despite industrial action aimed at Australia Day.
Unions fighting the State Government for a bigger wage increase have declared this a day of action, the Herald Sun reports.
But Parks Victoria has made arrangements to ensure fireworks go ahead and parks stay open.
The authority will use non-union staff and staff not taking part in the action.
Australian Workers' Union Victorian secretary Cesar Melhem said the move to bring in strike-breakers was inflammatory.
"There is nothing about the 'fair go' on which this country was founded in any of Parks Victoria's actions so far," Mr Melhem said.
"It is difficult to believe this is anything other than an attempt to hide this Government's unwillingness to make a fair deal."
Environment Minister Ryan Smith said the action was disappointing.
"My office has been working with Parks Victoria to make sure contingency staffing arrangements are put in place to ensure that parks across Victoria will remain open," Mr Smith said.
Unionists will ban the opening of gates at parks, and will stop work between 7pm-11pm.
Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said he would not want to see Australia Day disrupted, but public sector workers had a right to take action.
"This is protected industrial action and unions and workers have a right to take protected industrial action," Mr Andrews said.
