FEDERAL opposition leader Tony Abbott says voters in Queensland are yearning for a change.

Premier Anna Bligh put Queensland on election footing on yesterday by announcing a March 24 poll, and she's already facing predictions of a Labor bloodbath against Liberal National Party Leader Campbell Newman.

Speaking to reporters in Sydney, Mr Abbott said a coalition win against the unpopular Bligh Government could not be taken for granted, but Queensland voters were desperate for change.

"I know that (Mr Campbell) is taking nothing for granted, and the coalition never takes anything for granted," he said.

"The Bligh government has been good at PR but has been very bad at delivering for the people of Queensland.

"I think a lot of people are desperate, yearning for a change in government in Brisbane, just as they're yearning for a change of government in Canberra."

Mr Abbott said he would help Mr Newman campaign in Queensland if he could, but only if invited.

"I travel often to Queensland, I get on very well with Campbell, I think Campbell is going to be a great premier of Queensland," Abbott said.
