WIMMERA farmers have backed a bid to improve real-time weather data at a meeting last night.

Wimmera Development Association have made a submission to the Bureau of Meteorology to upgrade the service which farmers describe as a "black hole".

Currently farmers check the Mt Gambier and Mildura radars to guess weather patterns before making decisions.

The submission says the radar would cost $7 million to install and maintain for a 10-year period.

The Wimmera Victorian Farmers Federation branch met yesterday to discuss the proposal.

Branch president Ross Johns said about 27 people attended the meeting and were "enthusiastic" about the proposal.

He said the current service was unreliable in the Wimmera and southern Mallee.

"We need more accurate information for spraying and putting fertilisers. There's a growing demand on agriculture."

He said as the weather got more volatile farmers wanted real-time data.

"The branch would like to invite the Bureau of Meteorology and the Wimmera Development Association to our next meeting in early April," Mr Johns said.

The meeting will be a joint meeting with the West Wimmera branch.

Mr Johns said the groups often worked together on issues of importance.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman last week said the submission was being looked out and a decision would be made within weeks.
