ABERCROMBIA is the perfect lifestyle property - for polo ponies.

With its Barwon River frontage, easy access to Melbourne and Lorne and pretty landscaped setting, it's also served owner, Melbourne stockbroker Ben Kay, pretty well.

"I came across the property six years ago; it wasn't on the market and I really loved the area - there are a lot of polo properties popping up around it - so I did a doorknock," Ben said.

"I wanted to be on the Barwon River and it just so happened that someone had something that fit the bill; from the very first time I looked at it, I fell in love with it.

"It's private, the trees bordering the property make it feel bigger, there are big old red gums out the back and by the time I got down to the river, I asked him what he wanted and bought it then and there - the rest is history."

Ben has since developed the 57ha property - "a holiday house for the horses" - putting in underground power, roads, fencing, and the infrastructure for training competitive polo ponies.

There's a stick and ball field, tack room, fitness track, round yard, spelling paddocks and a one-bedroom cottage, all less than six years old and in landscaped surrounds.

Water is supplied via the Barwon River and a large dam.

"It works well as a weekender and anyone could walk on to the property and have nothing to do - unless they wanted to build a big beautiful home out the back under the red gums, looking out to the Otways," Ben said.

This was his original plan, before the opportunity arose to buy a larger property with an established home closer to Birregurra.

Ambercrombie is 8km south of Winchelsea and 17km east of Birregurra. It can be reached in 1 1/4 hour's drive from Melbourne and is half an hour from Lorne.
