SENIOR Liberal Eric Abetz has ridiculed Labor suggestions Malcolm Turnbull is positioning himself for a return to the party's leadership.
Assistant Treasurer Mark Arbib made a rare appearance at the doors of parliament today to "wonder" why Mr Turnbull was increasing his public profile.
The former Liberal leader, now the opposition's communications spokesman, made a number of media appearances yesterday in response to a government announcement about the purchase of two satellites for the national broadband network.
He was quizzed on ABC Television about his leadership aspirations, given talk about a Lazarus-like return by Labor's Kevin Rudd.
Mr Turnbull said he was "100 per cent certain" Mr Abbott would remain Liberal leader. He did not think there was any prospect of any changes "certainly between now and the next election".
The coalition had a very effective leadership team, he said.
Senator Arbib said Mr Turnbull's return to the spotlight was timely.
"As someone formerly involved in business he must be questioning the economic competence of the Liberal Party," he told reporters in Canberra today.
But Senator Abetz said it was Labor that had the leadership problem.
"I can assure you the Liberal Party is very comfortable, very happy with Tony Abbott as its leader," he told reporters.
"I'm not so sure Senator Arbib could say that about Ms Gillard."
