UPDATE: SMASH investigators have laid serious charges against a man over a road tragedy near Phillip Island today.
A woman died after two cars collided near Phillip Island at 6am, the Herald Sun reports.
A 38-year-old man from Wonthaggi has been charged with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, driving while disqualified and driving in a dangerous manner.
He will appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
The accident happened just after 6am about 2km north of the Anderson St roundabout on the Bass Hwy, near Bass.
A police spokeswoman said the woman was the only person in her car.
The male driver of the second car was not injured and is speaking to police.
Meanwhile, a teenage girl is in a critical condition after a head-on collision near Ballarat last night.
The 18-year-old from Alfredton suffered life-threatening injuries when a red hatchback crossed to the wrong side of Old Melbourne Rd, Warrenheip, and slammed into her Ford sedan about 7.30pm.
The woman was taken to Ballarat Hospital in a critical condition and was expected to be airlifted to Melbourne.
The female driver of the Hyundai hatchback, a 37-year-old from Ballarat, has been taken to Ballarat Hospital with serious injuries.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the collision and appealing for witnesses.
