THE Ballarat Football League has applied to take over administration of a metropolitan football competition.

Ballarat league chief executive Rod Ward confirmed his organisation was in the running to add the Riddell District Football League its administration hub.

The Ballarat league already administrates the Maryborough and Castlemaine District Football League and also ran the Lexton Plains Football League before it was disbanded at the end of 2010.

The Riddell District league includes Woodend-Hesket, Rockbank, Broadford, Sunbury Kangaroos, Kilmore, Wallan, Melton Central, Lancefield, Romsey, Riddell, Macedon and Diggers Rest in its senior football competition.

While many of these clubs are located in country towns, the league is not part of the Victorian Country Football League and is instead overseen by AFL Victoria.

The competition's general manager and operations manager resigned from their roles earlier this month, creating the administration vacancy.

The Ballarat league's proposal is currently with the Riddell league's club presidents, who have until next week to provide feedback.

Ward said an operations manager would be installed in the Riddell league's offices in Sunbury if the Ballarat league's proposal was given the green light.

An AFL Victoria review of football in the Riddell region is also slated to take place this year.
