SCANNING demonstrations have begun at Victoria's sheep saleyards.
The latest in portable sheep scanning equipment, the Delta 6, was demonstrated at last week's Wycheproof store sheep sale, with the roadshow scheduled to visit a dozen Victorian sheep and lamb saleyards in coming weeks.
It is part of a $1-million investment by the Victorian Government to ready the state for mandatory electronic eartag tracing, similar to what already exists for cattle.
Livestock Saleyards Association of Victoria executive officer Mark McDonald said they wanted to avoid the problems that arose when a National Livestock Identification System was implemented for cattle.
The project would allow the needs of saleyards to be quantified ahead of possible mandatory electronic sheep eartagging of sheep.
"This project will allow us to quantify the needs of individual saleyards if the next step (of mandatory electronic eartags for sheep) is taken," he said.
