A CENTRAL Victorian shooter has urged the State Government to allow the commercial harvesting of kangaroos.
Craig Chappel from Calivil wants the Government to abandon what he called a ridiculous law which prevented shooters from collecting kangaroos destroyed under permit.
"This is the only state in Australia which has a law like this," he said.
A report, believed to recommend a change in the state's laws, was handed to the Government a few weeks ago.
Landholders are able to destroy about 30,000 kangaroos a year in Victoria but, other than taking some meat for personal use, must dispose of the carcasses.
The Competition and Efficiency Commission is believed to have recommended a change in the Victorian law.
The Government is expected to respond to the commission's recommendations by the middle of this year.
Mr Chappel said he was frustrated every time he was asked to cull kangaroos on Victorian farms to have to leave the animals to rot.
"What a waste, it doesn't make any sense at all," he said.
Mr Chappel said he believed Victoria had a large enough kangaroo population to sustain its own commercial industry.
