THIS stunning Inverloch property is as close as one can get to Arnhem Land in Victoria.

Kallina, with its 23ha of cleared farm land and scrub and Mount Gambier stone house with glimpses of Bass Straight, has been a private oasis for teachers Phil and Anne Hargraves for the past 16 years.

"My wife was born and bred in Inverloch ... I've been here since 1970 full-time - and we love this district. We've had lots of events here: weddings, open days and charity functions," Phil said.

"We started building in 1996 and have extensively developed the areas around the home; the water, the close scrub, gardens, lawns and rock wall."

When Phil and Anne first came across the property, it was mostly scrub and it was only when it returned to the market some years later, after the previous owner had levelled areas, that they could visualise their home.

The resulting two-bedroom stone, glass and timber building is striking and yet in harmony with its surrounds. All rooms have double-glazed, wall-to-ceiling windows overlooking water and farmland.

Timber ceilings and kitchen joinery complement cool granite benches, tilled terracotta floors and exposed stone walls.

"One end of the home is self-contained with its own bathroom, carport and entry and could be used as a bed and breakfast," Phil said.

A hut beside one of the lakes has a bathroom and sleeping quarters. About 15ha with mature shelter belts is suitable for running cattle, sheep or horses.

There is a big garden, orchards, chicken run and many sheds.
