THE Victorian Government has been called on to ensure PrimeSafe review its operations after the closure of a Gippsland abattoir.
The LE Giles abattoir at Trafalgar was closed last November after the release of an Animals Australia video that showed alleged animal-welfare breaches.
The Department of Primary Industries launched an investigation and industry regulator PrimeSafe demanded Giles surrender its operating licence.
The Giles family claim they were acting within animal-welfare guidelines.
Opposition agriculture spokesman John Lenders has now demanded Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh ask PrimeSafe to review its decision.
Mr Lenders also called for a wider review of PrimeSafe's processes and conduct.
Mr Walsh said this week that he would not order a review of PrimeSafe.
"PrimeSafe has a very important job to do ... it is disappointing that John Lenders is trying to score political points on this," he said.
Darnum free-range pig producer Bronwyn Cowan, who had her animals processed at Giles' facility, said she supported the call for the investigation.
"It is about time it happened it should have happened immediately," Ms Cowan said.
